"The live sonics, a touch close and maybe very slightly edgy, actually suit the boldness and panache of the music. Haydn lovers rejoice."
"Fortunately, this is one of the better live recordings I've heard, almost making that 2% you could say...It's miked fairly close, as we might expect of a live recording, yet it still shows a good deal of air and space around the ensemble, as well as displaying a fine sense of depth and dimensionality."
"...these inscriptions – engineered and edited by David V.R. Bowles – capture the incisive clarity of Haydn's often audacious symphonic inventions."

Chanticleer - The Mission Road The Mission Road
Produced, Engineered, Edited, Mastered

Chanticleer and music director Joseph Jennings presents "The Mission Road" - a program of authentic and rich vocal repertory from the Mexican Baroque and other musical treasures of New Spain many originally performed in the California Missions, accompanied by five instrumentalists. Recorded at San Francisco's fabled Mission Dolores, the CD includes Juan Bautista Sancho's Misa en sol, (Mass in G) sung in Latin; selected works by renowned Mexican Baroque master Manuel de Sumaya, only recently discovered in the Mexican City Cathedral Archive; in addition to various vocal compositions (introit, processional, alleluia, and recessional) by anonymous Spanish/Mexican composers of the late 18th century, all sung in Spanish. While all of the original instrumental parts have been lost, acknowledged Mexican Baroque musical authority Professor Craig Russell has carefully restored these parts after two years of extensive research, allowing for these musical works to be heard as originally intended for the first time in 200 years.

Chad Runyon, baritone, and Jacqueline Chew, piano, present all 22 songs of the Niles-Merton Songs, Opus 171 and 172. The Trappist monk Thomas Merton, and balladeer John Jacob Niles both lived in Kentucky and met only a few times. When Niles set Merton's poetry to music, their lives were embedded. The pieces are arresting, provocative and beautiful. Upon hearing the first three songs of the cycle, Merton burst into tears saying, "it was really a moving experience for me." The project was recorded at Skywalker Sound in Marin County, August 10 and 11, 2005.
